Rock masses contain discontinuities at different scales, such as cracks, joints, shears and faults, forming discrete fracture networks (DFNs). These fracture networks have significant effects on rock fragmentation, excavation stability, fluid flow, and contaminant transport. The motivation of this research program is to incorporate realistic DFN in advanced numerical simulation models to investigate the excavation response of mining engineering structures such as tunnels, stopes, and open-pit slopes so as to reduce rock engineering risk and improve mining safety and productivity. The objectives of the project are: (1) to conduct research to improve the capabilities of the MoFrac tool for engineers and geoscientists in Canada to conduct realistic 3D DFN modelling effectively; (2) to demonstrate how advanced rock engineering in fractured rock masses can be conducted using the advanced synthetic rock mass modelling approach that incorporates realistic DFN models; (3) to transfer knowledge to the industry by means of (i) deploying the new algorithms and modules in the MoFrac tool and making the new-feature-enhanced tool available to Canadian researchers and subsequently to industry at large; (ii) training of new HQPs and personnel from the industry partners; and (iii) publishing the research results in high impact peer-reviewed journals and international conferences. The approach to be adopted is a combined application of experimental observation, field monitoring, and numerical modeling. The outcome of the research will contribute to nuclear waste management and mining in Canada to allow engineers to have an advanced tool to conduct engineering design analysis in fractured rock masses. This has the distinct potential to materially improve the safety, productivity, and profitability of surface and underground engineering projects.
