A global pandemic resulting from transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2), commonly referred to as COVID-19, coronavirus, was declared early in 2020. The virusspreads through virus-bearing respiratory droplets expelled from an infected person to a susceptible individual through direct or indirect contact. Immediate actions were taken to limit the spread of the virus across theglobe, and the need for information, protective equipment, and the re-evaluation of public spaces becamenecessity. Sysconverge Inc. (Sysconverge), based out of the Greater Toronto Area, specializes in buildinganalytics and design. Sysconverge offers subject matter expertise in engineering, technology, softwaredevelopment, infrastructure, and energy management solutions through identification of risks and mitigation strategies for buildings. Sysconverge has helped customers in higher education, retail, institutional andpharmaceutical industries reduce health and safety risks against harmful airborne particulates, improving healthprotocols and updating mitigation strategies. To enable better-informed decision-making through acquiring, disseminating, and analyzing data to increase building efficiency and experience, Sysconverge is collaborating with George Brown College (GBC) to identify probable changes or modifications of existing buildingparameters to improve architectural designs, interior finishes, and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and AirConditioning) systems in indoor environments to improve health and safety. The proposed research will consistof a literature review, development of building assessment tools and inspection of several spaces atGBC to investigate methods of limiting transmission of harmful air particulates. This work will provideSysconverge with the ability to provide Canadian businesses and organizations with practical information, services and strategies to make workspaces safer against the spread of air-borne viruses such as COVID-19.
