This proposal is intended to launch a collaboration between the University of Calgary (Welch) and the University of Glasgow (Draper). The scientific aim is to advance Printed Solar Cell technology where both performance and stability are increased to accelerate commercialization and gain new understanding into device operation and role of interlayer materials. The proposal will combine the Welch lab expertise in solar cell device fabrication with the Draper lab expertise in green materials design and synthesis. Specifically new cathode interlayer materials will be synthesized and used to modify the interface in-between the photoactive layer and top metal current collector. Key materials innovations proposed inlcude green synthesis, aqueous based film formation, and film solvent resistant. Research roles and responsibilities for HQP include organic materials design and synthesis, multi-layer stack photovoltaic device fabrication using spin-coating (small area) and slot-die coating (large area) methods, electronic testing of the devices under outdoor and indoor lighting conditions and mapping the device layers using advanced tools such as atomic-force microscopy and optical spectroscopy.
