The goal of this project is to develop new, lightweight, highly efficient, compact, and high performing aluminum-intensive induction motors (IMs) for a multi-motor, all-wheel drive electric vehicle (EV) application in an effort to reduce the cost and to extend the driving range of EVs. The proposed multi-disciplinary research project is executed by several University of Windsor researchers and is at the intersection of several disciplines including materials, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and software engineering. This project aims to address the following objectives: 1) manufacturing new enhanced high strength and conductive aluminum alloy based materials and processes for motor parts such as rotor bars, stator winding, and casing; 2) accurate motor structural design models and optimization methods; 3) thermal and structural analysis; and 4) advanced comprehensive testing methods. These objectives are moving forward research toward development of light weight multi-material and highly efficient traction motors with improved thermal and structural integrity. The project will train many graduate and undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows. They will all acquire research expertise and capabilities by interacting with supporting organizations to advance IM technology and to help propel a paradigm shift in overall EV design. This project is supported by research institutions and technology end-users such as Nemak Engineering Centre, Ford Motor Company of Canada, and D&V Electronics. This project will lead to decision points, proof of concept and product implementable solutions for Nemak, Ford, and D&V Electronics by enabling them to successfully compete in the global automotive sector. The transformative nature of this project, due to strong industry/university partnerships, will strive to make both Canada and supporting organizations global leaders in the field of transportation electrification. Mass consumption of these energy-efficient EVs will also benefit Canadians' health through a lowered carbon footprint and a cleaner environment through reduced emissions.
