Developing processes that directly convert methane to higher‐value products has been a technological goal for over a century. However, it remains to be one of the biggest challenges in modern catalytic science. At the forefront of these developments is the use of inorganic frameworks, known as zeolites, which are able to host metal species and to control observed reaction selectivities through size exclusion and confinement effects. This chapter will describe the three main areas of research for the direct conversion of methane to higher‐value products using zeolite‐based catalysts, including differing mechanisms of methane activation and the different active sites hosted by the zeolites.
