The septo-hippocampal pathway is one of the best characterized central cholinergic pathways. It provides a convenient preparation for studying the central cholinergic system. This pathway is probably not purely cholinergic. The proportion of cholinergic neurons among the septo-hippocampal neurons (SHNs) is of 30 to more than 80% depending on the techniques and the area investigated2,3,4. The purpose of the present series of experiments was to analyse the properties of the SHNs and to try to characterize various subpopulations among these neurons. We studied SHNs in the anaesthetized rat, using extra and intracellular techniques and microiontophoresis. These neurons were located in the vertical limb of the nucleus of the diagonal band of Broca and in the medial septum (MS-nDBB). They were identified by the electrical antidromic stimulation of their axons within the fimbria. Parts of the present results have already been published5.
