MOLECULAR approaches have f undamentally altered our knowledge of plethodontid evolution at all levels of biological complexity, from genomic evolution to organismal morphology, speciation and phylogeny (Table 1). They have permitted resolution of the processes and patterns that emerge at each level and the evolutionary interactions that occur among levels, thus providing a better understanding of factors that both enhance and constrain variation and evolutionary change. This review summarizes our knowledge of the hierarchical processes and patterns of plethodontid evolution as revealed by diverse molecular studies. Studies completed before 1984 were given detailed coverage in an earlier review (Larson, 1984). Here we emphasize subsequent discoveries and new directions. We consider in order the species, demic, organismal, and genomic levels, and then we discuss how molecular phylogenies, by identifying monophyletic groups, provide an historical framework for the study of evolutionary interactions among these different levels.
