Vannuscorps and colleagues report an unusual case of a young woman with a specific perceptual deficit: 2D stimuli defined by sharp or high-contrast boundaries and line drawings appear to lack a stable global orientation. Davida misreports the orientation of such objects in several systematic ways, including orientations offset by 90*, 180* or 270* from the veridical, and reflections across major axes. This perceptual deficit is not present for lower contrast or blurred stimuli, or by the addition of other cues such as a third dimension. In contrast to the inability to make accurate global orientation judgments, many of Davida’s other perceptual judgments are intact: for example, size judgments, global shape identification, and relative orientation of subparts within an object. The authors posit that the specific disruption arises from the parvocellular pathway’s contribution to the remapping of retinotopic and shape-centered coordinates onto behaviorally relevant body- and world-centered coordinates.
