Research demonstrates that ethnic minorities are less likely to receive quality health services and to evidence worse treatment outcomes when compared with White Americans (Institute of Medicine, 1999; US Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 2001). Although considerable progress has been made in establishing and defining efficacious treatments for the general population, relatively little is known about the efficacy of evidence-based psychological practices (EBPPs) for people from diverse backgrounds (Bernal & Scharrón-del-Río, 2001; Hall, 2001). In this chapter, a brief overview of each model is provided. Because recommendations for cultural adaptations that arose from these two models have been presented in previous publications (Hwang, 2006b, 2009), this chapter focuses more on illustrating the process of treatment development and providing readers with examples of discussions and questions that arise from integrating theory-driven and formative approaches. Further, it is impossible to fully address treatment issues associated with the incredible diversity encompassed under the label Asian American in one chapter. This chapter focuses on more recent Asian American immigrants and emphasizes values and similarities that are potentially generalizable across multiple Asian American groups.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
