The scientific results presented in this thematic volume stem from a bi-national research group financed by DFG (German Science Foundation) and NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China) entitled ‘The Precambrian–Cambrian ecosphere (R) evolution: Insights from Chinese microcontinents’. It started in 2008 under the coordination of Christoph Heubeck and Maoyan Zhu, but had a predecessor in the ‘DFG-Bündelprojekt’‘From ‘Snowball Earth’to the Cambrian bio-radiation: A multidisicplinary study of the Yangtze platform, China’, initiated by B.-D. Erdtmann and Maoyan Zhu. This project was successful in improving our understanding of numerous aspects of the palaeoenvironment and biological evolution across the interval of the Precambrian–Cambrian transition. It resulted in the publication of a special volume of PPP (Zhu et al., 2007). Its successor, the German ‘Forschergruppe 736’and its Chinese counterpart followed thematically in the footsteps provided by Erdtmann and his ‘Bündelprojekt’colleagues in the task of a multidisciplinary approach on the earth-life system evolution from the Snowball Earth to the Cambrian explosion during the Precambrian–Cambrian transition interval. The work initially focussed on the Yangtze Platform of South China with sedimentological, palaeontological and geochemical directions (2008–2011), but has been expanded to other regions including research in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Namibia, Spain and the Tarim Basin of western China as well. The emphasis of the international project was now on the interrelationships and mutual modification between life forms and environmental variables at the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition and the integration of palaeoecological and evolutionary aspects with information from sedimentology and chemostratigraphy under an improved chronostratigraphic framework. It led to the publication of a compilation of eleven articles in the Bulletin of Geosciences (Fatka et al., 2012). This compilation of largely palaeontologically oriented papers was supplemented by a special issue of Precambrian Research, focussing on the geochemical aspects of the research (Shields-Zhou and Zhu, 2013: Biogeochemical Changes across the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition in South China).
