Right-conversion is an urban redevelopment approach which involves transferring of rights on land and building to the equivalent floor of newly constructed buildings in the project area. This chapter details the design of a right-conversion game and its application to a slum redevelopment project that aims to provide affordable housing in Addis Ababa. In this study, the basis of an Addis Ababa version right-conversion is first identified. Then, the game is developed, and a playtest is performed on a case study slum area in Woreda 01 in Lideta Sub-City. The result of the conducted playtests revealed that the approach is an effective way to deliver affordable housing and furthermore, it contributes to improving the participation of residents in the decision-making process, utilizing land efficiently, and creating a design responsive to the local lifestyle.
