PLASTIDS and mitochondria contain populations of covalently closed circular DNA molecules that are replicated and inherited independently of nuclear DNA. Transmission of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to progeny is determined by maternal and paternal inputs at fertilization and by mechanisms of elimination from the zygote. In addition, because there are many organelles per cell and DNA molecules per organelle, inheritance patterns are also influenced by vegetative sorting at cell division and by differences in replication rates among molecules in germ-celllineages. A decade ago, research on organelle transmission was limited to the few organisms for which genetic markers were available, and it was possible to postulate'laws' of organelle genetics1
