Childhood studies, particularly as it has been developed in the UK, have recently been struggling with the concept and implications of children's agency. However, some authors in the Minority World argue that friendship can be seen as a social relation that binds people to one another through bonds of affection'. The author focuses on data from the multi-ethnic nursery, as providing a rich research setting to consider interdependencies of peer relations. In some Majority World research, reference is made to how older children show authority, power and care towards the younger children, and how the latter often take on marginal roles or play on the margins. This chapter explores children's complex interdependencies' by looking at peer relations, social identities and belonging. Majority World research is an important starting point to think critically about the tendency of Minority World research in early childhood to focus on peer relations and social identities within the school setting.
