Since the early attempts to generate silicon cations in the 1950s, several research groups have tried to tame the exceptional reactivity of cationic silicon‐based Lewis acids and harness their unique electrophilicity as catalysts in challenging transformations. However, it was not until the end of the last century and because of the commitment of various research laboratories to understand the behavior of these highly reactive intermediates that silicon cations were shown to enable the activation of a variety of substrate classes in a catalytic manner. This chapter summarizes those recent developments in the application of cationic silicon‐based Lewis acid catalysts to facilitate a diverse set of transformations such as reduction, hydrodefluorination, and C─C bond formation.
