Similar in outline to its two predecessors (Fozard, 1990; Kline & Scialfa, 1996), the present chapter is based on a search of over 600 articles published in 1994-1999. The number of relevant published articles is significantly greater than avail able for earlier handbook reviews-only about 29% could be cited in the present chapter-and the diversity of specialty journals in which they are published is much greater. The current review emphasizes research differentiating functions that change or stay constant over age. Re-search conducted in the last 5 years is characterized by careful control of visual and auditory sensitivity between younger and older subjects and precision in stimu-lus presentation paradigms. Convergence of laboratory findings with findings from population-based studies and longitudinal studies indicate that senescent changes in certain auditory and visual functions are only observed in the oldest age decades (over 75 or 80 years).
