Ethnic group differences in alcohol use have frequently been reported in the literature. Once differences are found. the quest ion that is ofte n asked is whether or not differences in drinking behavior can he attributed to genetic differences. environmental (cg. cultural) differences or to some combination thereof. Survey data indicate thar among Hawaii's major ethnic groups. Caucasians are the mos t freq uent users of alcohol: and when they do drink. they drink more than any other group (this is especially true for distilled spirits-hard liquor). Persons of Chinese ancestry arc at the other end of the continuum with regard to both frequency and quantity of alcohol usc (Schwitters ct al. 19H3.! l.) g2). The other four groups reported on hy Schwitters and colleagues-Filipinos. Hapa-Haoles (one Oriental and one Caucasian parent). Hawaiiuns/purt-Hawaiians, and Japanese-are intermediate in drinking behavior relative to the Chinese and the Caucasians.
