Since becoming a member of the engineering education community, I have noticed continual discussion about language as it relates to describing student experiences. In this guest editorial I would like to redirect the debate surrounding metaphors, particularly our use of pipeline, pathway, and ecosystem, as they relate to the national effort of broadening participation. Although the policing of metaphors in our community (i.e., people telling others what they should and should not use) has puzzled me for some time, it was not until I readMetaphors We Live By (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980, republished in 2003) that I could articulate my frustration. The purpose of this editorial is to (a) unpack the role of these metaphors in conversations about broadening participation and (b) introduce what I call “participation paradigms,” each reflecting the preconceptions represented by the associated metaphor. This discussion is important because our use of metaphors shapes the forms of research, practice, and policies we pursue, and informs what we think others should pursue. Instead of promoting one metaphor over others, we should more intentionally leverage our metaphorical imagination and acknowledge that these are not merely linguistic expressions. By repositioning these metaphors as paradigms, we can see the distinct preconceptions that each represents.
