Spherical microfossils collectively referred to as fungal “sporocarps” are widespread elements in Carboniferous coal balls and chert deposits, as well as Triassic permineralised peat from Antarctica. However, these structures are unknown in strata older than Carboniferous and younger than Triassic. This paper describes a new microfossil (<70 μm in diameter) from the Lower Devonian Rhynie chert that is composed of a spherical cavity sheathed by a prominent, two-layered hyphal investment. The fossil is interpreted as a fungal “sporocarp” based on correspondences in morphology to the predominantly Carboniferous “sporocarp” genusMycocarpon; the nameMycocarpon rhyniensenov. sp. is proposed for the species.Mycocarpon rhyniensepredates the heretofore oldest evidence of fungal “sporocarps” by approximately 80 million years.
