This chapter integrates a growing body of research highlighting the importance of expectations for decision-making into existing interdependence perspectives on close relationships and describes a new measure that assesses expected aspects of interdependence to assist with future research. It briefly reviews the primary tenets of interdependence theory and the theory and research suggesting that decisions are often determined more by expectations than by current or previous experiences, thus suggesting that current interdependence perspectives may be incomplete to the extent that they emphasize intimates' beliefs about the present or past over their expectations for the future. The chapter identifies unique sources of relationship expectations that may lead such expectations to diverge from beliefs about the present or past. It presents the methods and results of a study that validated a new measure of expected satisfaction, alternatives, and investments. The chapter discusses how this measure can be used in future research and the implications of this study for interdependence theory. Intimates consider not only their past and current relationship experiences, they also envision how their relationships will affect them in the future.
