In normal homeostasis, cancer defense, or stem cell therapy, epidermal progenitors undergo constant competition to reach an equilibrium state. In this issue ofCell Stem Cell, Mesa et al. (2018) and Murai et al. (2018) show that skin epidermal progenitors maintain tissue homeostasis through competitive equilibrium under physiological self-renewal or oncogenic conditions.
