This essay aims to rediscover the relevance of empirical studies on the efficiency of methods used in learning to read during the period of National Socialism in Germany, and of their ideological underpinnings. In addition, it investigates the compatibility of the progressive educational motto “to start from the child” with National Socialist concepts of educating the “Volksgemeinschaft” (Aryan-German ethnic community).
