The developmental model of the closet (DMC), as proposed by Pachankis and Jackson (2022), provides a conceptual framework for understanding the experiences that shape and are shaped by the period of time between labeling oneself as a sexual minority and first disclosing one’s sexual minority identity. It offers novel insights into the learning that takes place prior to sexual orientation awareness and how that learning influences one’s experiences in and out of the closet; the unique stressors experienced during this developmentally sensitive period; and the effects of these experiences on psychosocial functioning throughout one’s life. In this Commentary, we pose three questions related to the conceptualization of the closet, the answers to which are critical to understanding sexual minority individuals’ experiences both in and out of the closet. First, where is the line between being in versus out of the closet? Second, what are the conceptual implications of experiences that challenge the existence of a distinct boundary between being in versus out of the closet? And third, what specifically must one disclose to come out of the closet?
