ConclusionIn Flint and Louisiana, and across the United States, what is common does not necessarily amount to what is shared; help and harm are both unequally distributed. Writing about the Black commons, Roane (2018) describes how relational practices enable a “bare form of autonomy”—the resilience of Black life amid political ecologies of anti-Blackness and domination that might otherwise only allow for stripped-down modes of living. Within extractive paradigms of capitalist relation, being neighborly and boiling crabs are not just matters of survival, they are practices that make a life: sites of collective endurance as much as of collective harm. The commons is a form of survival that is not at odds with thriving, a lively relational practice unto itself.
