The balance of realism and rigor in psychological research is essential to the development of rich and accurate theories about the developing brain. In the field of neuroimaging researchers have used predominantly controlled laboratory methods to decompose neural signals into meaningful functions but there is currently a push to integrate naturalistic conditions into neural measurement. Sometimes naturalistic methods are used to validate existing functional theories ecologically, and other times they are used in data-driven studies for exploration. This article assesses the value and risk of these approaches for understanding the developing brain.
