Although there is no consensus definition, the following characteristics are typical of premium cigars:(1) being handmade,(2) having filler that is> 50% natural long-leaf tobacco,(3) being wrapped in whole leaf tobacco,(4) weighing> 2.72 g per cigar stick,(5) having no filters or tips, and (6) having no characterizing flavor other than tobacco. 1 While overall prevalence of use is low among the general population of the US adults (0.6–0.8% from 2013 to 2018 1), premium cigars are the second most commonly used cigar type among the US adult cigar smokers. 2 Importantly, premium cigar smoke contains many toxic and potentially toxic constituents that are associated with adverse health outcomes (eg, cardiovascular disease, lung cancer) depending upon patterns of use. 1 Although the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 (TCA) gave the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory authority over cigarettes, smokeless, and roll-your-own tobacco, it was not until 2016 that FDA finalized a rule extending that authority to cover other nicotine and commercial tobacco products, including premium cigars. 3Commercial tobacco marketing is significantly associated with initiation of various tobacco products. 5, 6 Understanding premium cigar marketing tactics has important implications for the development of potential marketing restrictions. Cigar festivals have been occurring in the US at least since 2002 (the year that CIGARfest in Pennsylvania’s Pocono mountains started). 8 Such events generally are advertised in cigar lifestyle magazines (eg, Cigar Aficionado), are sponsored/hosted by cigar brands and magazines, and
