Hormones other than PTH or the vitamin D sterols have definite effects on renal handling of Pi. Although Phosphaturic or antiphosphaturic actions of such hormones, for example, insulin, have been known for decades (Allen et al., 1925), this area has been investigated in much less detail than have the effects of PTH. The problem is further complicated by the numerous interactions among the various hormones and by their effects on variables which are known to influence tubular transport of Pi, for example, net intestinal absorption of Pi, extracellular fluid volume, acid-base state, and tubular handling of Na. The nephronal sites of action and the molecular mechanisms by which net tubular transport of Pi is affected are not known for most of the hormones discussed below. This field awaits careful and comprehensive study in the future. It also remains to be clarified whether the effects on renal handling of Pi are due to direct action of the hormones on the kidney or to their effects on extrarenal organs.
