The Coxsackie B viruses (CVB) are members of the genus Enterovirus and share many properties with other members of this group. There are several excellent reviews covering the basic epidemiology and clinical characteristics of enteroviruses and their infections1–4; this material is not repeated in detail, except as it relates to recent studies. Most of the conclusions concerning enteroviruses in general are directly applicable to CVB, including seasonality; geographic, age, and sex distribution; incidence and prevalence; transmission; and most clinical syndromes.
