At this point, one can only speculate that the disproportionate number of genes affecting cell-cell interaction and signal transduction might be a reflection of functions not necessarily required for embryonic survival but might be especially critical to nervous system development or physiology. The importance of deciphering gene function has been especially highlighted by the discovery of the genes without known functions causing the majority of early onset familial Alzheimer’s disease and trinucleotide repeat diseases such as Huntington’s disease.
