Secondary malignant neoplasms (SMNs) are considered one of the most devastating late effects of cancer therapies, as they are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Defined as histologically distinct neoplasms that develop after a first cancer, SMNs are estimated to account for 6–10% of all cancer diagnoses in the United States. 1, 2 In particular, survivors with a history of cancers during childhood and adolescence have a significantly increased risk of developing a SMN. The therapeutic advances that have improved survival in these pediatric patients have resulted in a 5–10-fold increased risk of developing additional tumors. 3–16 Additionally, as survival rates continue to improve, it is predicted that the occurrence of SMN will increase accordingly. 9, 15, 17–24
