There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is water?” This article is a story about water. It is a story about trying to understand the natural habitat of certain problems that, on their face, look like problems about whole numbers. To be sure, the problems we discuss are number theoretic in character, but the way to access them and to think about them is informed by a different part of Mathematics: geometry.
