A factor which releases growth hormone (GH) has recently been isolated from a human pancreatic tumour (Guillemin et al. 1982, Rivier et al. I 982). Immunohistochemical studies using antiserum to this GH releasing factor (GRF) have revealed the presence of GRF-positive cell bodies in the hypothalamus, mainly the arcuate nucleus, with particularly dense networks of fibres in the median eminence (Bloch et al. 1983, Bugnon et al. 1983, Jacobowitz et al. 1983, Merchenthaler et al. 1984, Sawchenko et al. 1985). In the present study, the distribution of GRF-immunoreactive neurons in the arcuate nucleus has been compared with the localization of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the enzyme converting tyrosine to L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), which in this area is assumed to represent a marker for dopamine neurons (see Hokfelt et al. 1984b).
