I graduated from Stanford in 1979 under the direction of Professor Richard N. Zare as my thesis adviser. My thesis was in physical chemistry and involved studying radiationless processes in molecular beams. I was not a mass spectrometrist but used my first mass spectrometer in 1976 as a fancy detector for molecular beam studies. It was an extranuclear quadrupole mass spectrometer we used to detect products of laser photodissociation. Most of my thesis though was based on laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy to study radiationless processes in glyoxal (Naaman et al., 1979). It was only at the end of my thesis work we obtained an old EAI quadrupole mass spectrometer from RM Jordan Co. which was in@@@ Mountain, View CA at the time. We were able to use this quadrupole to perform experiments in multiphoton ionization (REMPI) which was becoming popular. In a classic study we showed that one could use these methods to distinguish naphthalene/azulene isomers in a molecular beam apparatus as published in J Chem Phys (Lubman et al., 1980)—but I had no connection with the mass spectrometry (MS) community at this time. After defending my thesis, I joined Quanta-Ray, Inc. in Mountain View, CA, which was a start-up laser company that was founded by professors at Stanford. I went there to develop a program in laser applications using their vintage Nd: YAG pumped dye laser system. This company was led by several veteran innovators from the laser industry including Gene Watson who was one of the founders of Coherent Radiation, Earl Bell who was a founder of Spectraphysics and held numerous patents including the original ion laser, Bob Mortensen who was an early leader in the laser industry and later founded Lightwave Electronics, Professors Bob Byer and Dick Zare from Stanford, Dick Herbst who invented the particular configuration of the Nd: YAG laser that was being sold by Quanta-Ray, Mel Kronick, a talented physicist who was my immediate supervisor, and a host of other very creative and innovative individuals.
