In 1977, the International Society for Artificial Organs launched the first issue of its official publication as Artificial Organs. Twenty years after the first issue, we received an article entitled “Clinical and Basic Scientific Implications of Cell Migration and Microchimerism After Organ Transplantation” from a transplant surgeon (1). The article shed light on “the 2-way paradigm after organ transplantation: host-versus-graft (HVG) with whole organs and graft-versus-host (GVH) as scientific implications of cell migration and microchimerism.” Recently, the concept has been accepted in the field (2)(1215 citations) and has guided us to current transplant medicine using immunosuppression drugs such as FK506, cyclosporine, and steroid therapy (3, 4). At theUniversity of Pittsburgh the Transplantation Institute was renamed the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute (STI) in 1996 in honor of the transplant surgeon. The institute is well known all over the world and has been a leading international resource dedicated to helping people with end-stage organ failure. As my colleagues had research and clinical experiences at the institute, the STI brings expertise from multiple disciplines including immunology, surgery, pathology, nephrology, hepatology, molecular biology, genetics, and cell physiology to improve the clinical, scientific, and social aspects of transplantation (http://stiresearch. health. pitt. edu/about). Thomas Starzl (called Tommie) was born on March 11, 1926, in LeMars, IA, USA. After graduating from Westminster College in Fulton, MO, USA he earned a MD and PhD (neuroscience) degrees at Northwestern University (1952). The double graduation was followed by an internship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. During his years of post-graduate surgical training at Johns Hopkins (1952–1956), Dr. Starzl acquired a widerange of skills in general, vascular, and thoracic surgery. He then built his surgical faculty career at top-ranked university hospitals. Dr. Starzl joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1981 as professor of surgery and led the team of surgeons who performed Pittsburgh’s first liver transplant. And then the legacy began in the development of a multiple organ transplantation program at the University.
