The family Togaviridae is presently composed of four genera, Alphavirus, Rubivirus, Pestivirus, and Arterivirus, of which rubella virus (RV) is the only member of the Rubivirus genus (Westaway et al., 1985a). The family name Togaviridae (from the Latin toga, for “cloak” or “shroud,” referring to the virus envelope) was initially adopted by the Arbovirus Study Group to describe only two genera, Alphavirus and Flavivirus, formerly the group A and group B arboviruses, respectively (Fenner et al., 1914). The arbovirus groups comprised a large and diverse set of arthropod-borne (arbo) animal viruses that shared the characteristic of having replicative cycles in both arthropod and vertebrate hosts (Casals, 1957). This system of grouping proved to be taxonomically unacceptable; therefore, a new family, the Togaviridae, was defined using more concise parameters (Fenner et al., 1974). This definition allowed for the inclusion of several nonarboviruses of similar morphology and size that were classified into two new genera, the Rubivirus genus and Pestivirus genus (Fenner et al., 1975, 1976).
