Breeding experiments with the gynogenetic Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa, proved that mosaicism, detected by flow cytometry with the fluorescent dye DAPI was restricted to the soma, and that gynogenetic reproduction was maintained by the offspring. Potential pathways for how mosaicism might have arisen in P. formosa are discussed.
