Indeed, until very recently there was very little one could see at the sea bottom. Photographs brought by various submersibles gave us the first peek at the fascinating organisms inhabiting the sea floor. Genome sequences of several marine bacteria and archaea now allow us to take a close look at the underlying biochemistry.
