In a central Swedish population of Leptidea sinapis L. different areas were utilized for ovipositing and feeding. The majority of the eggs (90.4 %) were laid on plants growing in a meadow, whereas the greater part of the flowers visited for feeding (96.0 %) were growing in the adjacent woods. In addition to being specialized so as to utilizing spatially separate areas for "breeding" and "foraging habitats", the butterfly population exhibited specializations with respect to resource utilization in both habitat types. Thus, only six out of fourteen available papilionaceous plants were oviposited on, 87.3 % of the eggs being laid on one species (Lathyrus pratensis L.). Likewise, only thirteen out of some sixty available flowers were fed on by the adults, 88.8 % of the flower visits being made to Lathyrus montanus Bernh., Viola riviniana Rchb. and V. canina L. The evolutionary aspects of adult and larval feeding specializations are discussed with particular reference to "resource predictability" and the coevolutionary relationship between insects and plants.
