The “social problems work”-approach alludes to professionals ‘producing’ social problems by organizational practice. They constitute cases whenever they utilize their discretion and act predicated on their remit, thus legitimizing the respective organizational background. In this regard, recent German educational policies have established a telling starting point for research: Increasingly, all-day schools have been installed in order to overcome problems like systematic educational inequalities, thus commissioning professionals in these schools to achieve more equal and more just educational arrangements. Concurrently, extant part-time schools are inversely facing an overt or covert allegation implying that they might not be able to meet crucial expectations of educational policies and the public. Against this backdrop, the article compares problem constructions of employees in all-day and part-time schools to explore the narrative legitimization of their practice. The empirical basis of the analyses comprises of focus group discussions and interviews in four primary schools. Our results indicate that beside the specific organizational structure of a school the social composition of parents bears significant influence: Socially privileged parents are perceived in a thoroughly different way than socially unprivileged parents. Altogether, in the respondents’ accounts organizational structure, the perception of parents’ social status, and specific local contexts are intertwined. The complex narratives yield the respective school as a feasible option to deal with relevant problems.
