This paper uses the initial resettlement conditions of refugees in Chicago as a near natural experiment to study how housing choices are made and actualized. Sixty-two refugees from three different ethnocultural groups (Muslim Iraqis, Karen Burmese and Lhotsampa Bhutanese) are surveyed after five years to analyze their housing movements and the reasons behind those movements. Using mixed methods, but relying primarily on individual interviews and census data, this research compares the trajectories of those three groups. Analyses indicate that the three groups follow very different residential pathways post arrival despite initially being resettled in the same census tracts. The discrepancy can be explained by groups making decisions concerning housing location and type based primarily on imported preferences, using resources accrued prior to arrival, within the context of reception (neighborhood and housing qualities). Looked at separately, each group superficially provides support for a different theory of residential attainment. However, when the individual is asked, the primary motivation for their decisions is an attempt to recreate aspects of their prior lives indicating that pre-arrival characteristics should be central to future theories of residential attainment.
