The use of an automatic solids injection system for the quantitative determination of total and individual plasma non-esterified fatty acids by gas—liquid chromatography is described. The method, which is highly specific for long chain fatty acids, has been experimentally evaluated and compared with titrimetric and colorimetric methods for the determination of plasma non-esterified fatty acids. The advantages of the method over manual injection techniques are discussed.
