In this chapter, we focus mainly on the range of interference and inhibition effects predicted by fuzzy-trace theory, illustrating them with data that characterize these mechanisms across the life span and in cognitively impaired populations. Tasks that we review include recall, recognition, and reasoning (eg, unpacking and conjunction fallacy effects in probability judgment). An implication of this analysis is that the line between memory and reasoning tasks is an artificial one. Tasks in both domains boil down to the representation of information, whether of experienced events or of background facts in reasoning problems; retrieval of knowledge, values, or reasoning principles that operate on such representations; application of retrieved knowledge, values, or principles to those representations; and, finally, metacognitive judgments to withhold or to output responses derived from these processes. Interference and inhibition come into play at each stage: representation, retrieval, application, and output.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
