In the spring of 2019, one of the giants of hepatobiliary, pancreatic and transplant surgery retired. Dr. Paul Greig, a master surgeon, outstanding educator, and wonderful human being decided that the time of putting his knife down had finally come. As with many great musicians, he knew exactly when the right moment to stop his music arrived. His retirement, however, should not be in silence. His amazing legacy is too loud for that, even louder than his beloved rock and roll music.Thousands of his patients will miss him, but, most certainly, the individuals who will miss him most are his trainees. Dr. Paul Greig was the heart and the mind behind the University of Toronto hepatobiliary and pancreatic/transplant surgery fellowship, one of the most prestigious and enduring surgical fellowship programs in the world. His exceptional ability to train the next generation of surgeons has exponentially scaled up his impact on the fields of liver and pancreas surgery. Dr. Greig’s approach was aligned with Halstedian surgical teaching, which focuses on the fundamental knowledge of basic sciences, research, and graduated responsibility1. In contemporary educational terms2, Dr. Paul Greig was an all-round flexible and adaptable teacher; someone who is aware of the whole teaching environment and can use different skills to teach both peers and juniors. With his ongoing advice, tips, and tricks, he could also be classified as a one-off teacher. Regardless of teaching style definition, the ultimate educational goal of Dr. Greig is the transference of knowledge to learners though a hands-on, authentic manner.
