Choosing a school is an individual process. The reasons parents choose a particular primary school for their child can have many different causes and motives. Different parent-specific paths and school choice processes result in attendance at particular schools and divergent decisions concerning sponsorship. In the following, the choice of a private primary school will be examined in more detail based on ten interviews, which were analyzed with qualitative content analysis. The aim is, on the one hand, to represent a possible reason for departure from the state school system, and on the other hand, to develop a typology of the justification mechanisms and school choice criteria for the choice of a particular private school by parents in Berlin.
