Detailed comparison of the ‘Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroidesGA’ strain used by Gabelliniet al.(1985) with genuineR. sphaeroidesandR. capsulatastrains indicated that the previously reportedfbcoperon ofR. sphaeroides(Gabellini and Sebald, 1986) encoding the structural genes for the Rieske FeS protein, Cytochromeband cytochromec1subunits of the ubiquinol: cytochromec2oxidoreductase, is not fromR. sphaeroides, but is rather from a strain ofR. capsulata. Consequently, the genuinebc1genes fromR. sphaeroideswere cloned using correspondingR. capsulatagenes as probes, and a partial nucleotide sequence for the Rieske FeS protein ofR. sphaeroideswas determined and compared with that ofR. capsulata.
