Proteolysis is commonly associated with degradation, inactivation, and turn over of peptides and proteins in cells (Goldberg & St. John 1976, Lajtha & Dunlop 1978 , Hershko & Ciechanover 1981). However, it also plays a more subtle role in the "functional modification" of protein substrates, through limited proteoiysis (Holzer & Heinrich 1980, Reich et aI1975). In recent years it has become increasingly apparent that the presence of biologically active peptides and proteins in cells and tissues is a function not only of the biosynthet ic mechanism per se but also of a variety of postsynthetic (i.e. post translationl) processing mechanisms. Several of these processes (e.g. gly cosylation, methylation, and phosphorylation) , because of their obvious in-
