August 2013. I was staying at Boot in Eskdale, having traveled there on the old narrow-gauge railway—“La’al Ratty”—that runs up the valley from Ravenglass. My aim was to explore the Duddon Valley, and to get there entailed a long climb up the steep Hardknott Pass followed by a noless-perilous descent. The two valleys were once connected by a paved Roman Road that gave access from the inner Lake District to the coast, although in later centuries this became little more than a rough track for pedestrians and packhorses. Now converted into a surfaced road, with many spectacular views from Roman Hardknott Fort, every two minutes a car or two passed me although I did not see a single walker. A tough ascent was followed by a slow zigzagging descent until I reached Cockley Beck Bridge and the River Duddon. To trace the river to its source was one of my goals that day.Guarded by mountains the River Duddon at this part (Wrynose Bottom) flows easy and slow, sauntering among grey stones, between grassy banks strewed with purple heather, blue harebells, and pale blue scabious. Higher up the slopes the river becomes louder with many little waterfalls as the water has to jump over huge rocks; several tributary streams, running down the fells, can be seen, among which should be the source of the Duddon, springing up somewhere toward the top of the fell. In seeking the “birthplace” of the river (Sonnet I. 9), I was following many Wordsworthian pilgrims who had done the same thing with a copy of Wordsworth’s Duddon sonnets in their hands. At the source of the river, the poet casually remarks:“How shall I paint thee?—Be this naked stone/
