In this chapter, young children’s (aged 0–5) use of tablets within family contexts is explored. The data are drawn from an ESRC-funded study of children’s use of tablet apps, in which 2000 UK parents completed an online survey, and six ethnographic case studies of families with children aged under five were undertaken. The analysis draws upon Bronfenbrenner’s theory of human development and Bourdieu’s notion of capital to explore how the dynamics of the everyday contexts in which the tablet use took place were shaped by multiple factors including family histories, parental expertise and children’s interests. This complex nexus means that children’s use of tablets is individually distinct, but certain patterns can be determined, which largely relate to families’ socio-economic and cultural capital.
