The year 2020 witnessed a change of leadership in Japan. Shinzo Abe resigned as Prime Minister due to health concerns in August, marking the end of his premiership which lasted for seven years and eight months since his return to power in 2012. Yoshihide Suga, who served as the Chief Cabinet Secretary for in Abe II–IV, won a landslide victory in the Liberal Democratic Party/Jiyu-Minshuto (LDP) primary, and formed his Cabinet in September. Covid-19 dominated the country’s politics throughout the year, and the summer Olympic and Paralympic Games were postponed.
