We investigated properties of Haar-like four-point orthogonal transforms. We considered several combinations of four subsets taken on the transform in order to observe that the directional characteristics of the transform change depending on the selection. Using these results, we conducted numerical experiments of nonlinear image approximation and image restoration. Results showed that we could achieve better visual and objective quality compared with the conventional Haar transform.
