HRS/J mice, homozygous for the autosomal recessive gene “hairless” (hr), develop a syndrome characterized by loss of hair after growth of the first pelage (Fig.244), rudimentary mammary gland development, and susceptibility to lymphomas (Figs.245 and 246) (Morrissey et al. 1980; Meier et al. 1969). At about 14 days of age, when the eyes open, hr/hr mice can be recognized by loss of hair on the upper eyelids (Snell 1931). Shedding begins under the jaw and on all four limbs then progresses to the base of the tail. During the 3rd week of life a wave of shedding spreads from these areas. The animal becomes essentially naked except for scattered hairs from tylotrich follicles (Mann and Straile 1961). The vibrissae become less numerous with age (Snell 1931). The skin of hr/hr animals appears wrinkled (Fig.244); however, heterozygotes have similar wrinkling which is not apparent due to the presence of the normal hair coat (David 1934).
